Banks Peninsula and Akaroa Tour
(Day tour: 8½-9 hours)
$145 ($210 incl. Akaroa harbour cruise)
The Banks Peninsula and Akaroa day tour from Christchurch is full of interest for the nature lover, and reveals the area's rich human history.
This day tour is a gentle meander over the scenic roads of Banks Peninsula, the remnants of two once great volcanoes. Now extinct, they have weathered down to form some of New Zealand’s prettiest landscapes - high craggy hills dissected by deep valleys and long blue bays.
Wander around charming Akaroa, founded by French colonists, and now one of New Zealand’s most picturesque seaside towns. It still has many late nineteenth century colonial cottages.
Yet this tour is more than just a return trip to Akaroa. For many people, the highlight is getting off the main roads and visiting quiet and remote bays, off the main tourist routes. A perfect place for morning tea!
You may optionally take the two-hour Akaroa Harbour Nature Cruise to view high sea cliffs and marine wildlife. Hector’s dolphins, the world's rarest marine dolphin, are seen on most cruises. You may also see New Zealand fur seals and little White-flippered Penguins.
Or you may like to take a relaxing hands-on sailing cruise on a 14-metre 'A-Class' yacht.
Alternatively take a walk in a nature reserve with a great range of New Zealand's native trees. Learn about the plants and animals of New Zealand’s forests, and get an appreciation of nature conservation in New Zealand.
